Sensitive skin can occur anywhere on the body, however the most frequent and obvious place is the face. This happens when the function of the skin’s natural barrier is compromised, resulting in water loss and allowing for the penetration of irritants. Sensitive skin symptoms are then exacerbated by factors that facial skin is most exposed to such as the sun, diet and harsh ingredients in beauty and cosmetic products. Dehydrated skin can manifest at the surface as fine lines caused by dryness are usually dull. It also feels tight and uncomfortable.

Ageing skin is also prone to sensitivity, as the thinning of the epidermis and reduced lipid synthesis can result in the barrier function being compromised. The result is a combination of fine lines and wrinkles with dry, reddened skin, and itchiness. Since we’ve come into the cold season, excessive cold reduces the secretions that maintain the hydro lipid film which then evaporates, causing skin to become dry and more prone to irritation. Low humidity also causes dehydration of the skin and can trigger sensitivity.

UV radiation and environmental stressors have all been shown to place skin under stress through the creation of free radicals, weakening its natural defences. In particular, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause skin to dry out and become irritated.

Research has shown that a number of active ingredients, which are largely nature-derived, can significantly reduce skin sensitivity. These are available in skin care products, making it possible to follow a regular cleansing and moisturising routine, while also protecting the skin.

Some of the recurring ingredients include emollient based names such as Glycerin, R.N.A and Hyaluronic Acid which help maintain skin’s moisture and alleviating dry skin, therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“For sensitive skin, the ingredients you do want to see are those that retain moisture (including emollients and humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid) and replenish the the lipid barrier (including ceramides and fatty acids like linoleic and alpha-linoleic acids). “It’s about trapping water and creating a protective layer,” says Dr. Nagler, dermatologist
