Retinol has been one of the most celebrated ingredients within skincare for years for it’s acne-improving and anti-ageing properties. However, it might be time for Retinol to move aside for more natural alternatives.

It has been known that “Retinol is prone to increase photosensitivity within the skin,” says Linda Blahr, Head of National Training at SkinCeuticals. “Always use a high, broad-spectrum sunscreen when using this product.” Natural alternatives have been knowing to have less negative effects on your skin rather than the Vitamin A derivative.

Bakuchiol has become known as one of these good natural alternatives to Retinol over the last few years. Bakuchiol works as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant, so it’s also ideal for those who suffer from dry, sensitive skin and can’t tolerate a retinol. Plus, the antibacterial properties of bakuchiol mean that it’s great for those with acne and oily skin,” says dermatologist, Dendy Engelman, MD.

Instead of this magical ingredient why not try Moth Bean, also known as Vigna Aconitifoliais new to the cosmeceutical market. Grown in Pakistan and India, Moth Bean, and is also a rich plant source of retinol. This climbing bean plant is renowned for its resistance to drought and arid conditions, so it’s not surprising that the extract could benefit our skin’s resistance and renewal.

Early studies of this ingredient have shown that it could have the ability to strengthen skin’s structure, increase cellular renewal and antioxidant abilities, which work to protect your skin from free radicals and UV. It can also penetrate deeper into your skin than other ingredients. As a result, it works similarly to Retinol as it boosts collagen production.

The reason why it has such great benefits is because of the amount of incredibly powerful antioxidants inside of it. These are caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid and kaempferol. When applied topically, ferulic acid and caffeic acid act like other antioxidants in that it helps to slow the ageing process by reducing the effects of damaging free radicals on the skin. It is also thought to protect against sun damage, as well as assisting in skin's regeneration functions to tackle skin that has already been over-exposed. In addition, it has the benefit of working well alongside other antioxidants, enhancing the stability and the efficacy of vitamins C and E.

The biggest difference between the Retinol and Moth Bean is the lack of negative effects. It is possible to use Moth Bean during the day as it doesn’t make your skin more sensitive to light.
